You don’t need a big budget to start using AI in your day-to-day work. Here are ten tools we keep coming back to — all with genuinely useful free tiers — covering writing, research, design, video, and voice.
For Writing and Research
ChatGPT is the general-purpose starting point — good for drafting, brainstorming, and quick answers. Claude tends to shine on longer, more careful writing and working through big documents. Google Gemini is worth a look if you’re already living in Gmail and Docs, since it’s built right in. For research specifically, Perplexity gives you a sourced, cited answer instead of a page of links to sift through, and NotebookLM lets you upload your own notes or files and get answers drawn only from those sources — plus auto-generated summaries.
For Design and Video
Canva’s AI features (Magic Design, background remover, text-to-image) make it easy to put together a social post or presentation without any design background. CapCut does the same for short-form video — auto-captions, background removal, and templates that cut editing time down significantly.
For Polish and Production
Grammarly catches grammar and tone issues in real time, wherever you’re typing. Otter.ai transcribes meetings or voice notes and pulls out summaries automatically. ElevenLabs generates realistic AI voices with a usable free tier — handy for narration or testing out a video idea before committing to a paid voice.
